Held in mid-March every year, the Melting Pot March begins at Winyah Auditorium, part of the former Winyah High School, and ends at Howard Adult Center, the former Howard High School. This symbolic route was deliberately chosen because before desegregation, Winyah was a Caucasian school and Howard was an African-American school.
The March, organized by the Georgetown Unity Alliance, emphasizes the importance of participating in open, impartial dialogue so we can all become greater by working together for the common good. It is open to all who wish to attend. Refreshments are served at the end of the March at Howard Adult Center.
The mission of the Georgetown Unity Alliance is to be a spark in creating a sense of community within Georgetown and the surrounding region.
