Francis Marion Park

For people who would prefer a small outdoor park in the heart of downtown Georgetown with access to the Harborwalk boardwalk overlooking the waterfront, Francis Marion Park is the perfect choice. This park is at the center of action during parades, festivals and music concerts held on Front Street, including the popular Music in the Park concert series sponsored by the Georgetown Business Association.

The park’s namesake is the famous colonial American soldier who was widely referred to as the “Swamp Fox.” Marion earned fame in the Revolutionary War by leading a band of soldiers in bold raids against large groups of British troops by using surprise and rapidity in the swampy terrain surrounding Georgetown. For a daring rescue of Americans surrounded by the British at Parkers Ferry, South Carolina (August 1781), Marion received the thanks of Congress. He was then appointed a brigadier general and after the war, he served in the senate of South Carolina (1782–90).
